Studying obesity and appetite control by quantifying orexigenic and anorexigenic hormones

Obesity, a risk factor for multiple diseases, is highly associated with impaired appetite control which is regulated by orexigenic and anorexigenic hormones secreted from gastrointestinal tract and appetite neurons in hypothalamic arcuate nucleus (ARC). Stomach-released ghrelin and adipocyte-secreted leptin are major hormones required for appetite control. Orexigenic ghrelin stimulate AgRP/NPY neurons to inhibit satiety neurons and promote appetite, whereas anorexigenic leptin stimulate POMC neurons to active satiety neurons and inhibit appetite.

More understanding about the molecular mechanism and regulation of orexigenic and anorexigenic hormones is critical for therapeutic intervention of appetite control and obesity. arigo offers quality ELISA kits and antibodies to facilitate the research of orexigenic and anorexigenic signals.
