Programmed cell death (PCD) is a controlled process required for the maintenance of cellular homeostasis and elimination of unwanted cells including cancerous and infected cells. PCD includes apoptosis and non-apoptotic cell death. Apoptosis is the best-studied form of PCD with the characteristic of caspase activation. Non-apoptotic cell death can be triggered independently of apoptosis or function as a backup mechanism in case of the failure of apoptosis.
