The infiltrating immune cells in tumor microenvironment have become a crucial point in cancer research due to their association with tumor progression and suppression. The anti-tumor immune responses involve cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and NK cells for identifying and eliminating cancer cells. In contrast, the pro-cancer immune responses involves regulatory T cells (Tregs) and tumor-associated myeloid cells (e.g., MDSCs, TAMs etc.) for supporting tumor growth and suppressing anti-tumor immune responses. Current cancer immunotherapies focus on enhancing immune cells to recognize and destroy cancer cells. Targeting immunosuppressive cell subpopulations may pave the way for future therapies.
