The proteins of this family are thought to be involved in microtubule assembly, which is an essential step in neurogenesis. The products of similar genes in rat and mouse are neuron-specific cytoskeletal proteins that are enriched in dentrites, implicating a role in determining and stabilizing dentritic shape during neuron development. Immunohistochemistry: Frozen section of Rat hippocampus stained with ARG11033 anti-MAP2ab antibody [5H11] (green) at 1:5000 dilution and co-stained with ARG10730 anti-NF66 / alpha Internexin antibody (red) at 1:2000 dilution. Clone 5H11 labels MAP2 protein in the perikarya and dendrites of the most neurons, and the alpha Internexin antibody selectively stains axons and dendrites of neuronal cells.

Western blot: Rat brain (whole), Rat brain (embryonic, E20), Rat spinal cord and Mouse brain lysates stained with ARG11033 anti-MAP2ab antibody [5H11] (green) at 1:10000 dilution.
A band at about 280 kDa corresponds to full length MAP2A and MAP2B protein. MAP2A/B is expressed heavily in brain particularly in cortical regions, but is a more minor component of spinal cord.
