GeneID: 5266 Human PI3

Swiss-port # P19957 Human Elafin

Gene Symbol PI3
Gene Full Name peptidase inhibitor 3, skin-derived
Background This gene encodes an elastase-specific inhibitor that functions as an antimicrobial peptide against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and fungal pathogens. The protein contains a WAP-type four-disulfide core (WFDC) domain, and is thus a member of the WFDC domain family. Most WFDC gene members are localized to chromosome 20q12-q13 in two clusters: centromeric and telomeric. This gene belongs to the centromeric cluster. Expression of this gene is upgulated by bacterial lipopolysaccharides and cytokines. [provided by RefSeq, Oct 2014]
Function Neutrophil and pancreatic elastase-specific inhibitor of skin. It may prevent elastase-mediated tissue proteolysis. [UniProt]
Cellular Localization Secreted. [UniProt]
Calculated MW 12 kDa

Immunohistochemistry: Paraffin-embedded Human tonsil tissue. Antigen Retrieval: Heat mediated was performed in Citrate buffer (pH 6.0, epitope retrieval solution) for 20 min. The tissue section was blocked with 10% goat serum. The tissue section was then stained with ARG59025 anti-Elafin antibody [C7] at 2 µg/ml dilution, overnight at 4°C.
