Bioinformation
Background | Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by several species of fungi, including Aspergillus and Penicillium. It is a naturally occurring toxin that can contaminate a variety of food products, including cereals, coffee, wine, dried fruits, and spices.OTA is a potent nephrotoxin, meaning that it can damage the kidneys, and has also been associated with carcinogenic and immunosuppressive effects in animal studies. In humans, OTA exposure has been linked to kidney disease, including Balkan endemic nephropathy, as well as to increased risk of urinary tract cancer and possibly other cancers. |
