Bioinformation
Background | Arginase (E.C.3.5.3.1) is a mammalian enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of arginine to ornithine and urea. Arginase is considered as an enzyme responsible for the cyclic nature of urea cycle, since only the organisms containing arginase are able to carry out the complete urea cycle. Two distinct isoforms of mammalian arginase have been identified that are encoded by two separate genes. Type I arginase (arginase I) is located in the cytosol and is mainly expressed in liver. Type II arginase is located in the mitochondrial matrix and is expressed in extra-hepatic tissues. |
