Macrophages are cells of the innate immune system that trigger inflammation. Activated macrophages are classified into M1 and M2 that mediate inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses respectively.


▶  M1 macrophages  secrete  pro-inflammatory  cytokines  including  IL-1β, IL-6, and  TNF-α to promote
     inflammatory responses.  Excessive  M1  macrophage-mediated  responses may lead to inflammatory
     diseases.


▶  M2 macrophages  are  induced  by IL-4  and  mediate tissue  repair,  immunosuppression,  and debris
     clearance by secreting anti-inflammatory factors IL-10 and TGF-
β. Hyperactivation of M2 macrophages
     is associated with fibrosis and tumor progression.
