Bioinformation

Background Ehrlichia species are transmitted to the mammalian host during tick feeding, being inoculated along with the tick saliva. Once introduced into the dermis, E. chaffeensis and E. canis have selective tropisms for monocytes and macrophages, while E. ewingii targets neutrophils and occasional eosinophils. On blood smears, the bacteria can be visualized as morulae, which are microcolonies of Ehrlichia inside host cell vesicles. Unlike the Rickettsiales, Ehrlichia do not replicate in the cytoplasm. Following uptake of the bacteria into vesicles, phagocytes disseminate hematogenously to the major target organs: liver, lung, spleen, and, for E. chaffeensis, the central nervous system. Ehrlichiae directly compromise the killing ability of these cells by preventing superoxide radical production and phagolysosomal fusion.
